Turkish government leaks data, they still got support.

Oct 13, 2024

After recent events that unfolded in Turkey, the government has banned Discord just like the other services like Roblox, Instagram and Wattpad.

Turkish online citizenship site turkiye.gov.tr (I will use the term "e-devlet" when mentioning this site), had personal information leaks dating back to 2015. Confidential data of more than 80 million Turkish citizens were on these hackers hands.

Those hackers, used Discord to sell the personal information they got from the leak. They created "panels" that would be the front-end of the ~10GB SQL file that included the personal information of 80+ Turkish citizens. News dating back to 2016 mentions these security vulnerabilities, but the government didn't really care about it.

Discord was banned in October 9, after all these connections with the hackers and the blackmailing, identity theft and other illegal stuff was uncovered. This resulted in Discord losing access to the Turkish residents, while those hackers still use Discord with VPN's and GoodbyeDPI

After all these, I made a post to a local forum, mentioning that people who do not understand the nature of online privacy and internet censorship were glad on X about the Discord block.

I get an absolutely crazy reply under it, stating that I was "acting like the attorney of Discord, which disobeyed our government." Here is a part of it:

They must fulfill Turkey's wishes and demands. I am a son of this state, why should I try to defend a platform that ignores Turkey and does not fulfill the demands of our state with words like freedom, democratic, cart curt? A state is governing here, it will of course act according to the attitudes of the platforms. Ahmet uses this platform, let's not touch it. Mehmet uses this platform, let's not touch it. Anyone who confronts our state must pay for it in some way. This is how it should be. (@ny_mycket on btt.community, my original post has been unlisted.)

First of all, I want to thank Discord for respecting the data privacy of their users. These hackers absolutely did something illegal (and morally bad), but I don't think the main suspect of this event is those hackers, but the Turkish government itself.

We argue about these, some people come and support me, I end the conversation with this:

The Digital Transformation Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, which is responsible for the management of e-devlet, has VIOLATED Articles 1b) and 1c) of Article 12 of the Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data by failing to fulfill its responsibility to protect our data. Who should I blame other than the state or the government? (me, again on btt.community)

Then the article is taken down and gets transformed into a private chat that includes all people that interacted with the entry. This was a move to stop the aggressive nature of the topic and I fully understand it. (Don't worry, wise!)

But it is still crazy how people are supporting the internet censorship, and how their data got leaked BY the people who they support in the first place. Thank you for reading.
